Review: Mated to the Reaper by Alexa Riley

SYNOPSIS:

Ariella Sterling was raised by a coven of vampires, but she was different than the rest of them. She was a miracle from the time she was born, and her parents worried about her safety. She was protected and cherished like no other because of her abilities, but something has changed since her eighteenth birthday. There’s a pain growing inside her and she doesn’t think she’s going to make it much longer. When the Grim Reaper walks in everything changes and now she’s got to fight for what’s hers.

Grim Reaper has spent years alone carrying out what he’s destined to do. But when he’s called to take another immortal soul, he realizes this one is different. From the moment he sees Ariella, he knows she’s his mate, but her family steps in and tries to keep them apart. They can do what they want, but there’s no stopping Death, and he’s going to fight for what’s his.

REVIEW:

True confession, I was going to skip this audiobook, mostly because I wasn’t a huge fan of Alexa Riley when I listened to their contemporary book in Season 1 of Read Me Romance’s podcast. But I felt guilty skipping it so I gave it a go, and I think I could actually enjoy their paranormal romance reads! I love a steamy, paranormal read and that’s exactly what this was.

The story was quick, hot, and can totally pull of the insta-love because of the whole concept of fated mates. The instantaneous attraction and knowledge that they found their one true love is a feature in all my favorite paranormal romances. It was a good balance of passion and drama, but everything was still wrapped up in a nice bow at the end. While I could have done without a few of the so-cheesy-I-cringed lines, and the whole “I filled her with my seed” lines, I mostly enjoyed this. To the point where maybe I was just reading the wrong Alexa Riley genre.
