Review: Prince by Cambria Hebert

SYNOPSIS:

Once upon a time…

A baby is born in privilege, blooming under the warmth of his parents’ love. Jealousy sprouts and brings with it malevolent intentions. A king and queen cursed with an empty kingdom. A child abandoned in revenge.
A misfit, the boy should turn hard and cold among the thorns he grows in. Despite lifelong attempts to destroy him, this child does not wither. Underneath his insecurity, he maintains a heart with the tenderest center.
A heart that plays the most beautiful music.

Not far from this misfit but in a whole different world, a dashing prince lives with a crown of expectations adorning his golden head.
A prince raised with honor and duty. A prince expected to marry.
Alas, during a simple walk in the forest, he is enchanted by a different song.
And so a fairy tale is woven, two worlds colliding, secrets revealed, love everlasting…
And a realization that not all fairy tales require a princess.

*Prince is a modern fairy tale forgoing heteronormativity to boldly state that fairy tales are for everyone, no matter who you love (or don’t).

REVIEW:

Sleeping Beauty with a dash of Tangled and Cinderella…but make it gay. Hello, new obsession. This modern twist on classic fairy tales was positively enchanting. A contemporary story line, charming characters, a wicked villain, and a romance for the ages had me quickly falling in love with this magical world.

I couldn’t do this book justice without gushing about Fletcher. He is by the far the star of the story. This man has been through so many horrors in life but his compassion and ability to love know no bounds. He has the biggest heart and his tender vulnerabilities had me swooning. He is so endearing, honest, and pure. He was the type of character that when he hurt, I hurt and when he celebrated, I found myself celebrating and smiling with him. Much like Ethan, I too found myself wanted to protect Fletcher from the harsh world.

Ethan was the dominant protector and while he wasn’t without his faults, he wasn’t afraid to be vulnerable. Ethan was willing to lay all his cards out on the table numerous times for Fletcher. Just when you think you have reached the depth of feelings between Ethan and Fletcher, something happens and their love burns even brighter. I could not get enough of these two.

The story was about so much more then the swoon-worthy romance. This is a such a unique retelling. There is the whole concept of found family and making your own family. This rag-tag team of misfits absolutely stole my heart. Ethan finds his voice, Fletcher finds himself and together they made my Grinchy heart grow three sizes. There was just so much depth and heart to this story that had me emerging myself into this world and never wanting to leave.
