Review: Wolfsong by T.J. Klune

SYNOPSIS:

Ox was twelve when his daddy taught him a very valuable lesson. He said that Ox wasn’t worth anything and people would never understand him. Then he left.

Ox was sixteen when he met the boy on the road. The little boy who talked and talked and talked. Ox found out later the little boy hadn’t spoken in almost two years before that day, and that the little boy belonged to a family who had moved into the house at the end of the lane.

Ox was seventeen when he found out the little boy’s secret and it painted the world around him in colors of red and orange and violet, of Alpha and Beta and Omega.

Ox was twenty-three when murder came to town and tore a hole in his head and heart. The boy chased after the monster with revenge in his bloodred eyes, leaving Ox behind to pick up the pieces.

It’s been three years since that fateful day—and the boy is back. Except now he’s a man, and Ox can no longer ignore the song that howls between them.

REVIEW:

This book left me speechless in the most wonderful way. I don’t think I have been this gutted by a story since I read Me Before You. With a captivating and enchanting story, T.J. Klune taps into raw emotions that elevate this book to a whole new level. I would even go so far as to say that this is best paranormal romance I have ever read.

There is a certain depth and richness that comes with a story that spans years. While Ox and Joe’s relationship is at the forefront of the story, this book was about so much more. I found myself utterly enthralled by the world-building and emotion-building. The characters emotions resonated deep within me and their triumphs felt like my own, but so did their devastation. This took me by surprise, how these characters so seamlessly slide into my head and heart and I found myself sobbing on numerous occasions.

Watching Ox and Joe become friends and then something more was so heartfelt. They are absolutely perfect for each other and while the story starts off with Joe as a little boy, he never wavers in his feelings for Ox, they only grow stronger. Ox was on his own for so long and to see him finally find friendship and solace with the Bennett family had my heart soaring. As the years pass by and Ox and Joe shift from friends into something more, it just seemed fated.

The characters were so dynamic, just when I thought I reached the bottom, they revealed more layers. The Bennett family stole my heart, especially the Alpha. Thomas was the best Alpha; accepting, endlessly patient, and he had the biggest heart. Kelly and Carter had a playfulness to them that lightened any tense situation. Gordo and Mark, I can’t even with these two other than to say that I am so excited for the next book.

The plot line was non-stop action. From hidden dangers to the endless plot twists I was left anxiously flipping the pages. While the romance is the main, the hidden world of werewolves and magic are the side dishes that make the course. The complicated laws of the wolves were flawlessly interwoven with the narrative as I learned alongside Ox, what this life entailed and just how deadly it could be. *heart breaks*

But I think my favorite part throughout this whole story was how the characters were constantly evolving and growing. They were petty, resentful, and jealous but also, passionate, steadfast, and strong. The complex emotional range had me immersing myself into Green Creek and this magical world and honestly, I never want to leave. This story was  candy canes and pinecones, it was epic and awesome.
